i am lejen

Brief Description:
Indie bookstore selling alternative books.

I have always passed by this shop whenever I go to popmyberry to get my Blackberry cases. I have always read the name of he shop but never looked into the shop maybe because the t-shirts on sale are not dominant to the view at one glance.

Anyhow, here I am tonight! :) They are known for selling alternative books. Aiming to encourage non-readers to generate interest to read. I hope they are successful at this! There are more and more people spending time doing everything else but reading. Sad but true especially with the growth of technology. It is not entirely bad but rate of interest people have in reading is deteriorating. :( In a simple line: The community would rather spend time on technology than reading. Why? Reading is boring. They said.

I AM LEJEN. Don't quite know where the name came from but I figure it is a combination of Malay and English for I Am Legend.

For those of you who are in Klang Valley, this shop is in Subang Jaya SS15. ;) If you are not in Klang Valley or Malaysia but interested, they have an online shop; http://shop.lejenpress.com/shop

I am very much intrigued to go to this shop because of the alternative genre. I know alternative music but alternative books? Interesting.

I first thought they only sell Malay books. When I stepped in, the first book I held was Wedding Speech. English! Phew! Nothing wrong with reading books in Malay language just that I usually have trouble reading it; need to reread few sentences or paragraphs a number of times to get it. Enjoyment could be turned off that way. Hahaha

Pardon the quality of the pictures. Need upgrade of my gadget man!

The following is the first bookshelf many will upon entrance. They are currently having discounts. :)

Buku Paling Laku. In English: Best Selling Books. Yes, I have to look for the translate button at he back of my brain to get this sign when I first saw it because it isn't familiar to my eyes whenever I ht bookstore. Alternative yea? ;)

This shelf looks nice!

Walked out with 2 books. 1 In Malay and another in English.
My first alternative reading! May book-loving person like me enjoys it.

The book in Malay title is Awek Chuck Taylor. Very famous and recommended so I'm giving this a shot despite being nervous about reading in Malay language(it has been ageeeeesss.Seriously!)

The other book is Timid. From the summary on the back cover:

"Nobody ever loves the same way twice. Angus was in love with Fay. Fay left and married another man. Devastated, Angus went to an island trying to forget everything. Angus met Beth. Fell in love. And the rest is written in this book. "

So....I guess buy this book? I bought. Mr.Husband paid. ;)

Fret not, books are reasonably priced.

Bookalicious!

Walked in with 1 book in mind;
Walked out with 3 books in hand.

Guess this is one of the rarest days at work; got to leave while Mr.Sun is still shining :) Was stucked in traffic to enter the highway for about an hour but was accompanied by a book. ^___^ Wake by Amanda Hocking.

I've been wanting to go to Bookalicious ever since the 3rd book of Amanda Hocking's Watersong series came out but haven't got the chance to so tonight, I had my starters at Bookalicious!

What is Bookalicious all about? It is a bookstore with deliciously priced books ;) If you have been to Bookxcess in Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya you will have a rough idea what Bookalicious is like.

Brief comparisons:
Price-wise, I can't really tell as I have never compared their prices 1-to-1.
Collections? Bookalicious has more new releases! At Bookxcess, you will need to wait.
Customer service? You will get a personal interaction with the owner at Bookalicious. :)
Very friendly and he sure knows his books! Me lurvvvveeeeeee! :)
Bonus?
Bookalicious mascot (is it a mascot?) is a cute cow.
With every purchase you will get a bookmark(if you are lucky, bookmarkS) while stocks last.
Designs of these bookmarks are changed every now and then. Didn't keep track but it is always different!
Want more? The paperbag is also cute! *grinssss*
Many would take paperbags as paperbags but I have some kind of obsession with paperbags and this one definitely made it to my collection!

'Nuff said. The following are the Bookalicious details.

Books Vending Machine

You read that right! Books in Malaysia will be as accessible as F&B! :) I was overjoyed when I first read the article published in The Star. This has been done in other countries some time ago like Germany and US.

MPH never fails bookaholics! I can't wait to see the vending machines in action! ^___^
Not only will be books be more accessible, it will be cheaper too!!!! How cool is that? ;)

Bumped into a blog on this! Bibliobibuli covered the awesome subject matter in 2005. Click here to
"flip" to the entry. In the meantime, I'm going to drool onto the vending machines around the world. Feel free to join me by clicking on the image below.

Roald Dahl Complete Collection

Part of my wish list this year is to have the complete set of Roald Dahl's. I got lucky; Puffin Books came out with "Roald Dahl Complete Collection - 15 Books in a Box Set". Simply awesome and of course irrisistable. I've bought 2 books before this came out but anyhow, I bought it! Thanks to my friends who has sponsored a little; told 'em I'll take it as an early birthday present. ;) I got even luckier that when I stepped into Kinokuniya, only one set left. There must be a gazillion other people eyeing on it!

Long Cool Glass of Books

Thirst for books? Head to Kinokuniya@KLCC. :) Their Long Cool Glass of Books Promotion was on in December 2009. For every RM100 purchase, you will receive RM10 voucher.

I got one voucher for free! Thanks to my bro.Hihihi The voucher is valid from 4th January 2010 til 31st March 2010.

Yet to decide which book to buy must most probably will get another Roald Dahl's as that's my aim this year; to collect all Roald Dahl's!

*I know this may be abit late of an info but you can always drop by Kino as they always have 25-30% discount on their gem books; usually purchase-with-purchase. Still not too bad. I find it more valuable than those offered by Borders. Borders seem to have quite a standard 2 for 3 promo. Don't mind the recipe books but others, I'll pass.*

Cecelia Ahern's If You Could See Me Now offer @MPH

Dear Cecelia Ahern's fan.

IF you have yet to have your hands on Cecelia's If You Could See Me Now, you may love the promotion MPH has now. For every purchase(any title), you are entitled to get the exclusive cloth bag
FREE! Would be great for shopping so that we can be kind to mother nature and yea...walk around with a pretty pink bag. ;) I've got a copy already so I guess I shouldn't buy it just for the sake of having that bag. Plus, I've bought more than 1 book this month...so gotta pass. :)

I first knew about the promotion when I dropped by MPH in One Utama but didn't take any pics because the security guard was just around the corner and the camera was right on top of my head. *won't take the risk eventhough I don't know if the cam can rotate or was even focusing on my spot* Today, I dropped by Mid Valley MPH and relied on my phone....not a very good quality pic but I got a shot. It is not that I'm stealing anything but anyhow....here's a peak at the poster.

Promotion valid from 1st January 2010 til 28th February 2010. Good new year gift for yourself or your girlfriend. ;) The current version of the paperback copy is thinner compared to the one published last year. I thought they cut down some paragraphs *silly me, I know* til I flipped through and saw the resized the font. :)

How I rank her books (yes.I've read ALL):

1. If You Could See Me Now
2. Thanks For The Memories
3. The Gift
4. The Book of Tomorrow
5. P.S. I Love You
6. Where Rainbows End
7. A Place Called Here

For more info on Cecelia Ahern's books, go to http://www.cecelia-ahern.com/books/

Love,
Ruz :)

January Books

I know I musn't spend too much this year especially on books coz I've got more than 50 unread books. Anyhow,I only bought 3 books this month! =)
I don't know how I got into buying recipe books but I can't resist the great simple delicious ones! Now I better clear up the magazines section on the shelves so that I can accommodate more recipe books. ^_^
Note to self:
Dig time to read and finish up more bookz!
Don't keep buying.Well can keep on buying but don't exceed RM1k ;)

Welcome, 2010!

Finally, I'm in the year I've been waiting for. =)
I believe there will be lots happening this year; be it career-wise or relationship-wise. *hihihi* I still do hope I can read a lot more books than 2009. Will see how work treats me this year.

I still see reading as the shortest escape from the hectic world I'm living in now. It would be great to be in a different place with a different setting once in awhile. However, due to lack of personal time and energy, I barely finish a book after May last year. *ouchhhh!!!*

Anyhow, this year started quite OK (books-wise).
1. Got Kinokuniya RM10 voucher from my bro.
2. Bought a Roald Dahl book. :)

I'm not going to drain anyone with new year's resolution like everyone else but this year, I'd love to collect ALL Roald Dahl's books! One book per month sounds good. :)
Still pretty hard to tell; books are forever irresistable!

A preview of what will rest on my bookshelves this year. ;) Roald Dahl is for ALL! *Else, you won't be watching Charlie and The Chocolate Factory =p *

Lastly, keep on reading you guys!!!! Hope I can update this heaven with posts atleast twice a month. :)

Malaysia Bookfest @ KLCC!

Looks like there will be book sales throughout the year! 2009 is definitely not being kind to Penniless Bookaholic Shopaholic *sighhhh* And now the Malaysia Bookfest is back!!! It was held at the same venue last year; KL Convention Center.

No entries on this here as this blog was only started early this year. ;) Anyway, here it is;a little recap on how it was last year.

I'm sure this will be the first question many would ask.
Was it worthied? YES. I remember I ended up buying a lot of books, a few CDs and also a thumbdrive. If I recalled correctly, I spent less than RM150. Discounts were also given on new best selling book; The Lecture was one of it. I remember because I bought 2 in Kinokuniya right before I went to the fest because I wasn't sure of going. Well, I was also alone.

I spent almost 2 or 3 hours there. Yes. The space is wide. Lotsa books. Need to REALY focus else all the books in the world would end up in my basket. Childrens' books were also given great discounts. Sooooooo many books but not too many people. Not great for the exhibitors but great for me. LOL!

When I got there, I was worried they only have Mandarin books coz there was barely any English words. LOL. I dropped by the information counter to ask just to know that there's an entrance fee. Just RM1 or RM2. Too small of an amount for big bargains. Btw, for those of you who reads Mandarin books, it would be great for you too because they have lotttssss and if the layout for the fest remains, you'll be going through the Mandarin books section first before you finally get to the English, Malay, Music and Stationaries corner. I don't read Mandarin but it all looks sooooo nice. The amount of books. The people picking books to have the reviews read.

Such a pleasant sight!

The following are the main info of this year's bookfest.

Venue : Kuala Lumpur Convention Center
Start Date : 22nd August 2009
End Date : 31st August 2009
Time : 1000 - 2200

For more information, visit www.bookfestmalaysia.com

Have fun guyz!!!!! =))

p/s: Should I go? Spent a lot already. There are still lotsa books to be read on my shelves...Hmmmm Gotta think hard coz sales are sooo irresistable. Plus, the new books that I want won't be out til Sept and Oct this year. Probably I should freeze up my credit card in an ice block before I go. And yea...I can only go if I'm not tied up with stuff....esp WORK. Urrggghhhh

It has been sooo long since I last got to read like mad....recently,I managed to do so. With a few sleepless nights and few early mornings, I'm done with 3 books this month. Moving on to my 4th book now. :)

There are still many books to be read (>10) but one can never have enough. My bookworm friend,Shin Jiin told me about the MPH Mega Clearance Sale a day or 2 ago. I wasn't too sure if I want go because I'm pretty broke but anyway, I WAS THERE DURING LUNCH TODAY!Lol!

I only had one book in mind but I failed. Books are always hard to resist. I ended up with 5 books. 1 is the one I had in mind. The other one is the one which has been on my list for quite some time. The other 3, I had my mom in mind.

Total Damage : RM97.65

If you ask me is it worthied, I'll say yes. 30% discount on top books like those of Sophie Kinsella, Cecelia Ahern, Dale Carnegie, Paulo Coelho, Jodi Picoult, Judith McNaught, Mitch Albom, Nicholas Sparks and many others. :)

There are also sections for 50% and 70% discounts. If you have time, I believe you might find more books worth buying. For those who are into cookbooks and children's book, you may be interested to drop by to see what they are offering. The cookbooks I bought are RM9.90 each. :)

For those who wonders what I'm blabbing about, click here for more details. Many said nothing compares to the Big Bad Wolf Sale but I've never been to it so I can't really compare. See if I could have the chance to next time. Heard there will be another one somewhere in November this year. ;)

Not cheap enough, go to Payless Books Sale!

Feel free to share. ;) Would be nice to hear from fellow readers.

Enjoy your weekend! Cheers!!!

More New Bookz in 2009

Gooshh! Work has definitely drained me....now I've got lots to catch up on.
Only today I managed to check out if there are any new books to be released by my favourite authors and guess what??? There are!

Every month, there will be a new book to look forward to.

End of July/Early August
(It was scheduled to be released in Aug/Sept 09 but there it is..on the bookshelves end of July 09...and I see it as my August book! =p)

September 2009
October 2009

What these two books are all about?
Click yourself to a brief review on each book mentioned above by clicking on the title. ;)

What's to be released in November and December by the superb authors? I'm yet to know but I do not foresee any because Sophie, Cecelia and Mitch is considered done. Would take a little bit more time until their next book. ;)

Buy Cheap Books ONLINE

There are many book warehouse sales held throughout the year but unfortunately for some, the sales are not held anywhere near their location. :( I know how you feel. It is wonderful to see the price of the books you want offered at a very low prices. But it is frustrating to know that the sales are nowhere near your place unless you are willing to drive few hours. *sweat*

Let me bring you some good news..if not great news. Especially to those who are at the other parts of Malaysia (or maybe the other parts of world too) where book warehouse sales is not commonly held. ;)

As of now, I've bumped into 5 websites which offers books at low prices. You can also sell your no-longer-wanted books there. ;)

Here you go!

AdPost.com Classifieds
http://www.adpost.com/my/?db=my_books&website=&language=&session_key

Bookster For Sale - Used Books - Wanted
http://www.bookster.com.my/

mySimplifieds.com
http://www.mysimplifieds.com/AdSearch.aspx?c=10&p=74

The Books Lover
http://thebookslover.blogspot.com/

eLawyer
http://www.elawyer.com.my/lawbook_browse.php?type=sale
Note : Great for law students! ;)

You may not find all the books you want but it is still great to know there are sites where you can try your luck to find some cheap ones. Well, you'll never know what you may bump into. ;) Not happy with the number of books you see? Here's what you can do. Introduce more people to the sites! The more people sells, the more books you will see! =)

If any of you happen to know more websites selling books at good prices, feel free to add more to the list. Just drop it in the comment and I'll append to the list. Thanks!

Incase you are still more comfortable to buy books from the well-known local bookstores, you can try Times Bookstores or MPH. I've shared my online book shopping on MPHOnline sometimes ago. To read, click here. As for Times Bookstores, they offer free delivery for purchases atleast RM200. Else, delivery service charge is RM10. To find out more about it, click here.

How To Buy A Book?

Everyone has their own ways to pick a book to read and yea...buy. It differs just like how our interests differs. I have quite a number of friends who would ask me what I'm reading and if I have any books I'd recommend them to read.
It may be quite a simple question for some but sometimes I feel it is quite difficult to answer. Why? I don't really know what kind of books you enjoy reading. You may not like what I like and I may not read what you like. Reading is all about interest. Why would you wanna read a abook you're not interested in? Rite? No doubt the answer won't be a yes when it come to educational books. Most of the time, textbooks are read coz it has to be read. LOL.
I'm no expert but here's how I usually pick my books. ;)
1. Purpose of reading? Gain knowlegde?Leisure?
2. Decide on the genre. i.e. Fiction? Non-Fiction? IT? Business? Self-help...etc? This is pretty much directly related to the first point.
3. Select books with the most relevant titles to the subject I'm looking for...or in some case, something which makes me feel like picking. =p
4. Read the review at the back of each books. Not interesting? Put it back on the shelf. =p
5. Look at the font used in the book. VERY CRUCIAL. If the fonts are too big, it makes you feel like you are reading a book meant for kids. Too small would hurt your eyes. Well, then again it depends on you. I'm comfortable with size 12. ;) If it is an educational book, do look at how the contents are presented.
6. Price and publisher. Some books are published by multiple publishers and prices might differ. This is when you can decide if you wanna judge the book by its cover or not. =p Don't think I need to elaborate more on this. ;)

Some lil tips. ;)

Most bookstores wrap their books. Well, they do this to protect the books. Sometimes only one book is left opened for readers viewing. Sometimes, none is. Well, to those who doesn't frequent the bookstores that much would find it difficult to decide on a book when it is wrapped. No worries. You can proceed to the Customer Service/Information counter and request to get the book(s) opened. You have all the rights in the world to do this. =D When you are done, do not leave the book wherever you please; return it to the counter.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy shopping for books! :)
