Malaysia Bookfest @ KLCC!

Looks like there will be book sales throughout the year! 2009 is definitely not being kind to Penniless Bookaholic Shopaholic *sighhhh* And now the Malaysia Bookfest is back!!! It was held at the same venue last year; KL Convention Center.

No entries on this here as this blog was only started early this year. ;) Anyway, here it is;a little recap on how it was last year.

I'm sure this will be the first question many would ask.
Was it worthied? YES. I remember I ended up buying a lot of books, a few CDs and also a thumbdrive. If I recalled correctly, I spent less than RM150. Discounts were also given on new best selling book; The Lecture was one of it. I remember because I bought 2 in Kinokuniya right before I went to the fest because I wasn't sure of going. Well, I was also alone.

I spent almost 2 or 3 hours there. Yes. The space is wide. Lotsa books. Need to REALY focus else all the books in the world would end up in my basket. Childrens' books were also given great discounts. Sooooooo many books but not too many people. Not great for the exhibitors but great for me. LOL!

When I got there, I was worried they only have Mandarin books coz there was barely any English words. LOL. I dropped by the information counter to ask just to know that there's an entrance fee. Just RM1 or RM2. Too small of an amount for big bargains. Btw, for those of you who reads Mandarin books, it would be great for you too because they have lotttssss and if the layout for the fest remains, you'll be going through the Mandarin books section first before you finally get to the English, Malay, Music and Stationaries corner. I don't read Mandarin but it all looks sooooo nice. The amount of books. The people picking books to have the reviews read.

Such a pleasant sight!

The following are the main info of this year's bookfest.

Venue : Kuala Lumpur Convention Center
Start Date : 22nd August 2009
End Date : 31st August 2009
Time : 1000 - 2200

For more information, visit www.bookfestmalaysia.com

Have fun guyz!!!!! =))

p/s: Should I go? Spent a lot already. There are still lotsa books to be read on my shelves...Hmmmm Gotta think hard coz sales are sooo irresistable. Plus, the new books that I want won't be out til Sept and Oct this year. Probably I should freeze up my credit card in an ice block before I go. And yea...I can only go if I'm not tied up with stuff....esp WORK. Urrggghhhh

SALE!!!! Sale!!! SALE!!!

It has been sooo long since I last got to read like mad....recently,I managed to do so. With a few sleepless nights and few early mornings, I'm done with 3 books this month. Moving on to my 4th book now. :)

There are still many books to be read (>10) but one can never have enough. My bookworm friend,Shin Jiin told me about the MPH Mega Clearance Sale a day or 2 ago. I wasn't too sure if I want go because I'm pretty broke but anyway, I WAS THERE DURING LUNCH TODAY!Lol!

I only had one book in mind but I failed. Books are always hard to resist. I ended up with 5 books. 1 is the one I had in mind. The other one is the one which has been on my list for quite some time. The other 3, I had my mom in mind.

Total Damage : RM97.65

If you ask me is it worthied, I'll say yes. 30% discount on top books like those of Sophie Kinsella, Cecelia Ahern, Dale Carnegie, Paulo Coelho, Jodi Picoult, Judith McNaught, Mitch Albom, Nicholas Sparks and many others. :)

There are also sections for 50% and 70% discounts. If you have time, I believe you might find more books worth buying. For those who are into cookbooks and children's book, you may be interested to drop by to see what they are offering. The cookbooks I bought are RM9.90 each. :)

For those who wonders what I'm blabbing about, click here for more details. Many said nothing compares to the Big Bad Wolf Sale but I've never been to it so I can't really compare. See if I could have the chance to next time. Heard there will be another one somewhere in November this year. ;)

Not cheap enough, go to Payless Books Sale!

Feel free to share. ;) Would be nice to hear from fellow readers.

Enjoy your weekend! Cheers!!!

Story about bestfriends who grew up together and "wasted" sooo much time and opportunities to be together. They became friends when they were 5. Writing letters to each other is a norm. This book, is filled with letters, notes, emails, chats and the very least; text messages.

Alex and Rosie are the two main characters. Story revolves around these two and the people they encounter and know in their life. Reader will grow from 5 years old to 50 years old with them in this story. From school to college to work. From dating days to marriage years to divorcing pain.

They may not have realized that they are soulmates but there are quite a number of times they could have ended up together. As a start, they couldn't love another person more than they love one another. They having feelings for each other but obviously kept hidden. There were ocassions where they almost got "there" but then again, it didn't happen. There will always be obstacles somewhere along the way.

Throughout the entire book, you can't help wondering when will they ever get to be with each other and will they even have enough time to be with each other? This story will remind people about what fate does to us, humans. And yea...also the fact that, soulmates exist and if it is meant to be, it will be. =)

It is amazing how Cecelia links many letters at one to tell the main story. Trust me 584 pages of communications between many individuals requires a lot more than just good grammar.

I have to say this book has a very down-to-earth characteristic. Nothing over the rainbow kind of fairy tale. It relates very closely to our life;friendship, family, career and etc. As in real life. Nothing like Mr.Tall Dark and Handsome but manly enough to sweep the female characters in the story.

I can't help this but this story may have a perfect ending to many but not quite for me. Why? Well, I love perfect happy endings. I know the whole point is to get them to be together but at 50????....Isn't that a little bit late? They could have enjoyed more if they ended up together after the first failed marriage. Why go through sooo many pain and sorrows? At the age 50, Rosie will look forward to have grandchildren from her daughter Katie. Not have her own with Alex. *siigghhh* Guess Katie and her bestfriend Toby does not repeat the mistakes her mom and Alex had done. =) I believe that is how the writer made up for it.

Judith McNaught's fans must have read this multiple number of times but anyway, here's my little review on this book.

Lauren Danner needed money for her family. Her dad contacted her distant uncle for help. She came just in time for the job. What she didn't know was she was appointed to be a spy on a company which happens to belong to the uncle's stepson. She thought twice about it. She went for the interview at the company she is supposed to spy on; Sinco.

Feeling guilty, she did very badly during the interview to not qualify for the job. Miracle happens right after the interview. She met a little accident where she had the chance to meet the handsome hero in the story, Nick Sinclair (stepson of the distant uncle).

She got accepted for the job she applied for (Thanks to Nick). After some time, she was selected to be Nick's secretary. Both didn't foresee the complications which awaits them. Lauren has been on Nick's side all the while but Nick and everyone else got the wrong idea and sees Lauren as a betrayer. She wasn't allowed in the company's compound. Let alone near Nick.

She went back to her hometown brokenhearted. It took Nick quite some time to realize he had made a mistake.

Beautifully written contemporary romance. :) Very sweeeeeeet. :) A must read for Judith's and romance fans!
p/s: Recommended by a bookworm friend of mine ages ago. Should have read this ages ago too. LOL! Next McNaught's book to be read : Every Breath You Take.Stttaayyy tuneeeddd! ;)

This book should REALLY be in the movies! =)

As expected, Sophie Kinsella never fails to satisfy her readers. The story is about a dead great aunt who came hunting for her favourite necklace by haunting her niece. Well, Sadie never intended to haunt her niece but Lara happens to be the only one she could communicate directly with. With such, she pestered Lara to delay her cremation and search for the necklace. Lara had a hard time coping with her already breaking apart life. Having a ghost distracting her all the time is definitely not helping.

Lara and Sadie became friends along the way. They helped and taught each other a lot of things. Well, Sadie taught Lara a lot of things from the twenties. She helped Lara opened eyes and heart to see that her ex-boyfriend is not so into her. Lara ended up being a successful head hunter and own her own company. Apart from that, she found her true love. As for Sadie, Lara helped her to discover truth about her love back in the yesteryears.

I believe I've spilled too much details here. All I want to say is this book should be in the blockbuster. I can see a very pale actress acting Sadie running around to annoy Lara. Best of all, the scenes will be filled with London views. :)

p/s: Woohoo! I got this book at 30% discount in MPH just a day before the offer expires. Woohoo! I managed to finish reading this despite the crazy working hours and no-life days. ;) Best of all, I get to share a review and update my blog!!!!

More New Bookz in 2009

Gooshh! Work has definitely drained me....now I've got lots to catch up on.
Only today I managed to check out if there are any new books to be released by my favourite authors and guess what??? There are!

Every month, there will be a new book to look forward to.

End of July/Early August
(It was scheduled to be released in Aug/Sept 09 but there it is..on the bookshelves end of July 09...and I see it as my August book! =p)

September 2009
October 2009

What these two books are all about?
Click yourself to a brief review on each book mentioned above by clicking on the title. ;)

What's to be released in November and December by the superb authors? I'm yet to know but I do not foresee any because Sophie, Cecelia and Mitch is considered done. Would take a little bit more time until their next book. ;)

No Reading; No Life!

This is going to be another "ranty" post.
I've been trying very very hard to read and post!
I've been trying since May! I barely even got the chance to drop by my own blog. *sigghhh*

Anyway, it is extremely hard that I do not get to read much lately. By the time I reach home, it will either be too tired to lift a finger or it is a.m. already that I am left with no choice but to try to get as much sleep as I could. Such a torture!

Lately, I have been straining my eyes late a night to read atleast 1 chapter. Trust me, straining my eyes to read a lovely book is a gazillion times better than straining my eyes to look at the computer screen. Worst of all, I see the black and white screen more than the colourful ones. "How niceee..." =p

For the past 2 weeks (after few late-night and early-morning readings), I managed to finish reading 2 books! =) Major achievement for me as it is a sign that I can still read as long as I have the energy to. As of now, I'm in the 3rd book of the month! Will definitely write some reviews.

And yeah...the Train Man post still needs a pic!Hihihi

Wish me luck! There are soooo many more books to enjoy!

If anyone from my project sees this, I need this to keep me motivated! ;)

This is not an ordinary book.
1. It may seem like fiction but it is really NON-FICTION.
2. The ending is not planned but it just happen.
3. Filled with forum threads. Lot of ASCII emoticons. :)

The started when a geek a.k.a. Train Man saved a girl from a pervert in a train. This led to a set of Hermes teacups as a thank you gift. Which then led to a thank-you-for-the-thank-you-gift dinner. What sets this story apart is that Train Man sought for help from an online forum.

With the help of the forum members, Train Man called Ms. Hermes. One date led to another and another and another. Train Main transformed from a geeky guy to a boyfriend-type. The forum members helped him from clothes to dinner place. Some helped to do research about stuff that went on between Train Man and Ms. Hermes just to keep Train Man prepared everytime he has a date.

When they are officially a couple, Train Man showed Ms. Hermes where his friends are. She was touched of course and said he tried too hard. :)

Amazing World Wide Web I would say. The real identity of Train Man and his girlfriend remains undisclosed until today to protect their privacy. This book was an international bestseller when it was published. It didn't just stop there. The story was also made into manga and movie.

It was a little different reading this book in the begining but as one gets into the story, it is actually nicely presented. :) Click here to visit Train Man The Movie site or to read another review on Train Man by another blogger, click here. The real threads where this book came from still exists and it now has a translated version but I can't seem to find it.

p/s: Yeay!!!I finally get to read this book til the end. *phew!* Lovely to finally have some time to indulge in reading. =) This is my second japanese translated book I've read. The first one is Totto-Chan. If any of you happen to know any good translated ones, feel free to recommend.

My favourite has got to be the ones in the Beauty, Shoes and Clothes topic.

Some tips covered by the book:

- How To Get Organized If You Use Several Handbags
- How To Prevent Blisters
- How To Stretch Shoes
- How To Slice An Onion Without Crying (I do not have this prob when I have my lenses on but a friend of mine once told me she had to put on goggles when she works on the onions. Poor girl. If she comes back to me and complain about the onions again, I'll tell her what to do...hihihi)

Buy Cheap Books ONLINE

There are many book warehouse sales held throughout the year but unfortunately for some, the sales are not held anywhere near their location. :( I know how you feel. It is wonderful to see the price of the books you want offered at a very low prices. But it is frustrating to know that the sales are nowhere near your place unless you are willing to drive few hours. *sweat*

Let me bring you some good news..if not great news. Especially to those who are at the other parts of Malaysia (or maybe the other parts of world too) where book warehouse sales is not commonly held. ;)

As of now, I've bumped into 5 websites which offers books at low prices. You can also sell your no-longer-wanted books there. ;)

Here you go!

AdPost.com Classifieds
http://www.adpost.com/my/?db=my_books&website=&language=&session_key

Bookster For Sale - Used Books - Wanted

The Books Lover
http://thebookslover.blogspot.com/

eLawyer
http://www.elawyer.com.my/lawbook_browse.php?type=sale
Note : Great for law students! ;)

You may not find all the books you want but it is still great to know there are sites where you can try your luck to find some cheap ones. Well, you'll never know what you may bump into. ;) Not happy with the number of books you see? Here's what you can do. Introduce more people to the sites! The more people sells, the more books you will see! =)

If any of you happen to know more websites selling books at good prices, feel free to add more to the list. Just drop it in the comment and I'll append to the list. Thanks!

Incase you are still more comfortable to buy books from the well-known local bookstores, you can try Times Bookstores or MPH. I've shared my online book shopping on MPHOnline sometimes ago. To read, click here. As for Times Bookstores, they offer free delivery for purchases atleast RM200. Else, delivery service charge is RM10. To find out more about it, click here.

Christopher isn't an ordinary 15-year-old boy. He's very good at Maths; he knows the the prime number upto 7057 and he could easily multiply in hundreds. Despite all that, he is autistic.

One night, he saw his neighbour's dog, Wellington killed with a garden fork. He was accused of killing the dog but they later found him not guilty. He loves dogs so much that he feels the need to know who killed Wellington.

He loves mysteries too. Particularly Sherlock Holmes. He took Wellington's murder as a mystery he has to solve. While solving, secrets are revealed one by one. The secrets eventually led to the killer.

I love this book. The first-person narration is superb. I don't know how much the author knows about a person with autism but from his writing, he somehow made the audience knows the reason behind their reactions. The book has a very good ending. The storyline is also very down to earth. :)

Btw, Christopher sat for the A-level Maths papers and he did very well. He's a genius. ;)

Interesting Authors.

Rudyard Kipling
writes only in black ink.

Virginia Woolf
writes standing up.

I wonder why.....
Well, my pens are 98% black because I find blue ink too common and words looks neater in black. Anyhow, if there are no other pens available I still end up with blue pens. Doesn't really matter.

Writes while standing up.....Hmmmm

I believe there are more interesting facts about other authors I'm yet to know.

:( I wish I Could:

This post is not-so related to books but I've got to write it out anyway...Just to let out how I feel about my reading lately. I can't say it is non-existent as I read everyday. I read work-related stuff. New site. New role. New set of responsibilities and I was extremely clueless so that is when reading comes in.

Reading techy stuff can be quite confusing especially when your head is not with it eventhough your heart knows you have to read it in order to get things done. Gosh! Now I'm starting to sound like a student. LOL!

Anyway, what I'm pretty upset with is....I don't seem to have enough time to read what I'm currently reading. :( Why?

1. I reach home pretty late everyday and the only thing I could do before I sleep is eat my dinner, clean up myself and hit the sack. No time for a single paragraph in a book.

2. I have to get up early...no I do not sleep more than 5 hours per day. :/ If I do, I'd end up being late to work. Thanks to the jam.

3. I can't laze on my bed with a book. Why? No time.O.K. This line sounds like a working adult. *phew!*LOL.

4. Weekends? I foresee that I will work more over the weekends in the next future. Hihi. :) Happy coz I get to work Not too happy coz I might have some personal stuff I wanna get done...and IF I do have my weekends, there'll be lots going on.

What do I do now to satisfy my hunger for reading? Read a lil while having dinner! LOL Progress might be slow but I still get to read. The lust for books can always be satisfied anytime! Why? I can shop online IF I'm so desperate for a new one but as of now, I only see one book purchase this month. (Hint : Remember Daruma? ;) ) Plus, I still have lotsa books on my bookshelves piling up waiting for me to read them.

So...as you can see, there is only 1 or 2 updates on my blog lately. No worries. I will continue blogging and talking more and more about book-related stuff you might miss out. ;) Reviews? It will come in right after I'm done with the book I'm reading.

If you happen to have tips on how I could squeeze in reading in my daily routine, do inform. Do not suggest me to read on the road, I'll get headaches. :(

Note : I will continue reading no matter what! Nobody and nothing could ever stop my love for reading and lust for books! =p As for the techy stuff I'm supposed to read, I hope I can release some brain cells for it to reside in. Hahaha! Oh! I soooooo can't wait for the next Sophie Kinsella book!!!!! =)

The name Totto-chan sounds funny to you? It sounds cute to me. =)

What's the book about? The book is written by the writer based on her own childhood experience particularly during her time in her elementary school; Tomoe. The story start off when Totto-chan was expelled from her school at the age 7. Why? Well, her teachers found her very disturbing as she was very curious. Her curiosity distrcted others in the class from paying attention. You may ask how can a 7-year-old be expelled from school and how hard can it be to get her under control. Well, there are 2 things she did that I remember clearly from the page where it was described til I finished reading the book; She was very excited about her school desk as it has an opening on top and she can keep her things in the desk and the part where she stood by the window of her classroom and call up for the musicians to play some songs. Her actions distracted the classroom and teacher didn't know how to handle her that they all decided to expel her. That is where Tomoe comes in.

It isn't an ordinary school. Mr. Kobayashi the headmaster of the school sees early childhood education differently and his has a deep passion for children. How is his school different? Classrooms were not in buildinds but in abandoned trains he brought into the school compound. Children were allowed to sit where they like in the class. Moreover, the children were given freedom when they'd like to finish doing which tasks of the day. They were taught to adapt to the world indirectly through their own kiddy-ways.

My favourite chapter of the book has got to be The Library Car where the headmaster brought in another train into the school compound to be used as the school library. :) Must be a lovely sight. *Awwwww* The chapter A Trip to a Hot Spring made me feel like joining her and her friends. Hihi In this chapter, Toi Spa was mentioned; hot spring in the sea. Here are some lines from the book which described the hot spring.

"The hot spring in the sea was unusual. It was not enclosed so there was no line to set off the hot spring from the rest of the sea. If you crouched down where you were told was the hot spring, the hot water came up to your neck and it felt lovely, just like being in a hot bath, If you wanted to go into the sea from the hot spring, all you had to do was move about fifteen feet sideways and the water gradually gets cooler. The further you went, the colder it got and you knew you were in the sea. so, after you had been swimming about in the sea and began to feel cold, all you had to do was hurry back to the hot spring..."

This book is suitable for all. Main focus on the book is Totto-chan's innocence and her curiosity. She is very lucky to have had an extraordinary childhood memories. Well, we were all kids some time ago and I believe we've got our own stories too. The underlying message in this story is how children's education should be as in how children should be nurtured in their own ways. Well, hard to achieve that these days. =/

I could go on and on about this book. The sentence construction and choice of words can be a bit off but the little girl in the book is cute! And it is not her fault the book turned out that way. It was translated from Japanese to English.

p/s: Could have finished reading this book many weeks ago if it wasn't because of too many distractions. :( It's been awhile since I last got to write a review but here it is!

He's Just NOT That Into You

I've not read the book and I know I won't. Thanks to the movie.

I don't know how many percent of the book is adapted into the movie but I assume the main idea is the same(like any other movies based on novels and books). The characters? I don't even want to go there.

Anyway, before you continue reading...This post will be mainly about the movie and I just have to put it here; in my book blog because it is based on a self-improvement book titled; He's Just Not That Into You. This book was published in 2004 written by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo.

A few friends on mine watched this movie already and they said it is nice and told me I should watch it too so I went. Watched it last weekend with my boyfriend and the movie sort of made us feel uneasy.

Here's what we saw in the movie.

It is full of psychos. SERIOUSLY.

a. Gigi is sooo desperate to hook up with somebody. She is always thinking if a guy would call her back or if she should call him back. She couldn't stop checking her voice mail and everytime her mother calls her, she would tell that she would call her mother back and of coz she didn't because she was soooo afraid she's gonna miss the guy's call (whoever the guy she went out with). All she talks about with her colleagues are her theories on why a guy doesn't call her back and etc. There is also one part where she misread mixed signals sent by a guy and threw herself on him. *siiggghh*

b. Beth loves her boyfriend sooo much and has been with him for a very long time but doesn't see herself getting married. Why? Well, she'd love to get married but her boyfriend doesn't believe in marriage. He kept stressing that they can be happy even without getting married and that they do not have anything to prove to everyone else to tell they are happy. She has been in the relationship for years and swallowed the fact that she may not be married at all. Her friends has quite a hard time talking about marriage in front of her. Her bf's role in the movie is very disturbing to me. Don't believe in marriage....so where does the relationship go to?*haihhh* Beth eventually broke up with her boyfriend as she could not take it anymore. They ended up being together again in the end and guess what? This is one of the 2 happy endings in this movie; her boyfriend who does not believe in marriage finally proposed and I like the way he proposed. Hahaha Think I'd shed happy tears if it happened to me. Hahaha

c. Janine is paranoid about smokers; her father died of cancer. Her husband admitted that he slept with another girl. She wasn't so pleased but she kept him until she found out that her husband smokes. She got furious when she found a box of cigarettes in her bedroom in between the folds of her husband's clothes one day. Well, the idea was that she wasn't so mad about her husband sleeping with another woman because he admitted but she was super mad because her husband lied to her about the smoking part. Hmmmppphhh If you ask me, I'd say...Yes.I'll be mad if I found out he smokes. I'd die if i found out he slept with another woman. He smokes; he dies. He sleeps with someone else; I die. Either way, both is not good. :/ Anyway, Janine and her husband doesn't have sex life. Don't know what is up with her husband. This couple also reveals how guys can lie. Very disturbing too. :(

d. Another girl, Anna. Singer in-the-making. Well, she is the woman Janine's husband slept with. She knows the guy she is sleeping with is married and I guess she loves knowing she is wanted and that guy is willing to give his marriage up until one day the guy got busted. Too bad for the guy. Both women doens't want him. HAHA. So guys, you might end up having the same fate if you cheat! Anyway, back to Anna. When she ditched the unfaithful husband she slept with, she went back to her so-called comfort friend named Ben if I'm not mistaken. She doesn't want anything to do with Ben but she would always lean on him when she needs comfort. Don't know what's her problem. Ben read it wrongly and asked her if she'd like to move in with him in the near future because if she would, he would like to buy a house he is about to sell; Ben is in the real-estate thingy.

e. Mary is almost like Gigi just that she doesn't really throw herself at guys she met. She wouldn't stop wondering if a guy would call her when he says he would.

f. Alex....he seems to be falling for Gigi but he doesnt' realize it. He keeps giving advices about guys to Gigi but he himself doesn't realize he is moving into "that" direction with her. Pretty blind to me. See girls, guys can be nice but that doesn't mean he's into you. =p Anyway, this is the other happy ending. Alex and Gigi hooked up.

There u have it!

After what I've seen, I'm not interested to read the book. =p Sowie.
The movie is pretty disturbing.

You may wonder why I'm talking about a movie in my book blog. This movie is based on a book. Usually, the book is better than the movie (minus Benjamin Button). Some stories are meant to be watched, some others meant to be read but this one...it doesn't appeal to me at all.

p/s: I started this post many many days ago when the movie was still fresh and the disturbing feeling was pretty strong but I didn't manage to complete it til tonite.

Reading on iPhone/iPod Touch

No Kindle? No problemo.
There is iPhone or iPod Touch for those who doesn't wanna get a new phone or simply don't wanna spend too much on a phone.

When I first had an iPhone in my hand, the first application I fell in love with was Stanza. (the iPhone's not mine; my bf'z). He simply downloaded the book titled "Gone With the Wind" but did not read it. I took it as he downloaded it for me. I planned to change to a new phone but the ones I eyed on costs more than RM2k so forget it. Then luck was on my side when a colleague was selling an 8GB iPod Touch at RM750. ;)

There are many applications which are FREE in the iTunes Store. There will be something for everybody. =)

Letz get to reading on iPhone/iPod Touch.
There are many applications available for you to download books such as Stanza and eReader. Those 2 are free. If you are willing to pay, I believe there are more options. My favourite has got to be Stanza.

What's so great?
Allow users to customize the background colour of the ebooks. Users could also customize how they want a page to be flipped, text color, font face, font size, text alignment, margin width and many more!

I'm not too sure if they have the latest books you see in the bookstores but they have books like
1. The Case of Benjamin Button
2. Phantom of the Opera
3. Pride and Prejudice
4. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and many more.

Love romance? Stanza has a section for Harlequin books; Harlequin 60th - Free Books!
Other categories? They have lotsa Classics, Sci-Fics and even technical IT books! How kewl is that????? =D

I'm yet to explore all because I normally look for books I wanna read. *hihihi*
Can iPhone/iPod Touch read the usual ebook formats like PDF, .doc and .htm? I'm yet to try. LOL. I believe it could. Just need to find the right application to install. ;) Check out the Stanza for Windows. It could convert your ebooks into the format used by the iPod device. This would allow you to get your ebooks onto your iPod device. Looks like I'll "camp" in Gigapedia.
( No idea what Gigapedia is? Click here. )

Wanna know what it looks like to read on an iPod device?
The following are a few related clips I found on YouTube.

Love Story by Erich Segal

Quite a typical love story about two young lovers; Oliver Barrett and Jenny Cavilleri. One from a very wealthy family and the other came from a poor one. Guy is very famous and girl loves music. Oliver left his family when he decided to marry Jenny right after their college graduation. Since Oliver's dad wouldn't support him financially, they went through alot to make ends meet.
I find their love a little odd and cute at the same time. Oliver relationship with his father IS odd. He refers to his dad as "son of a b*tch" and "stone". Guess it is a result of his high expectations for his son. *siigghhh*

Jenny's father on the other hand is like any other fathers who loves their child sooo much. He gave blessing to their marriage as he sees that his daughter is happy. He accepts the way things are between Oliver and his family and their religous view. The only thing that matters to him is that his daughter is happy, loved and well-cared for. Unlike other parents, he didn't ask how Oliver is going to feed his daughter. hihihi

Oliver managed to get his law cert and got a job with a high-paying salary. Their marriage got a lot better. With the stability, they decided to try for a baby. That is when everything starts to collapse. Well, not everything. He still has his job and he eventually reconciled with his father.

Think I might read this book again. It makes me go up and down the slopes in such a short timeframe. Maybe because of its length of story. At one point, you'd be laughing at how funny their conversations are. Others you'd feel low,angry.....

Note : No picture taken for this book; ebook. Yeah...I couldn't wait 'til the time I wanna spend my bucks to get it. Downloaded it right after I came back from Kino.Though I've read, I still would like a copy!hihihi

eBook Readers

Remember Mr.Kindle? ;)
Well, if you don't, click here to get to my post about it in February. It is quite unfortunate that it is not supported in Malaysia.
We've talked about Bookstores Wars, sibling rivals and how other countries envy another country when it has the tallest building...tallest tower and etc. Same case with eBook readers. Besides Kindle from Amazon, there are other ebook readers such as the following.
1. Papyrus by Samsung
2. iRex iLiad by Philips
3. Fujitsu Flepia and many many more...huhuhu
Sounds strange to you? Never heard of them?
Go to this site to see read more about it. ;) Who knows if you could even afford one. ;)
The site introduces Papyrus and later on talks a little about other ebook readers.
I think I like the Plastic Logic; it could read some common ebook formats like .doc and .pdf. Maybe it could read .html as well. :)
Which one would you like? ;)

How To Buy A Book?

Everyone has their own ways to pick a book to read and yea...buy. It differs just like how our interests differs. I have quite a number of friends who would ask me what I'm reading and if I have any books I'd recommend them to read.
It may be quite a simple question for some but sometimes I feel it is quite difficult to answer. Why? I don't really know what kind of books you enjoy reading. You may not like what I like and I may not read what you like. Reading is all about interest. Why would you wanna read a abook you're not interested in? Rite? No doubt the answer won't be a yes when it come to educational books. Most of the time, textbooks are read coz it has to be read. LOL.
I'm no expert but here's how I usually pick my books. ;)
1. Purpose of reading? Gain knowlegde?Leisure?
2. Decide on the genre. i.e. Fiction? Non-Fiction? IT? Business? Self-help...etc? This is pretty much directly related to the first point.
3. Select books with the most relevant titles to the subject I'm looking for...or in some case, something which makes me feel like picking. =p
4. Read the review at the back of each books. Not interesting? Put it back on the shelf. =p
5. Look at the font used in the book. VERY CRUCIAL. If the fonts are too big, it makes you feel like you are reading a book meant for kids. Too small would hurt your eyes. Well, then again it depends on you. I'm comfortable with size 12. ;) If it is an educational book, do look at how the contents are presented.
6. Price and publisher. Some books are published by multiple publishers and prices might differ. This is when you can decide if you wanna judge the book by its cover or not. =p Don't think I need to elaborate more on this. ;)

Some lil tips. ;)

Most bookstores wrap their books. Well, they do this to protect the books. Sometimes only one book is left opened for readers viewing. Sometimes, none is. Well, to those who doesn't frequent the bookstores that much would find it difficult to decide on a book when it is wrapped. No worries. You can proceed to the Customer Service/Information counter and request to get the book(s) opened. You have all the rights in the world to do this. =D When you are done, do not leave the book wherever you please; return it to the counter.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy shopping for books! :)

SURF!

Finally!!!! Urgh! I don't know how many times I've walked into MPH and Kinokuniya to look for this Mag; SURF! Only yesterday I see it on the rack. *phew*

Well, they don't seem to publish the mag every month....and unfortunately, i dunno how often they come out with a new issue. :
Why I like SURF!?
1. Malaysian and soooo related to the current IT stuff we have in Malaysia and of coz around the world too (esp if any of it affects our IT world in Msia)
2. They don't juz talk too much about Hardware, Games and Gadgets. They cover lil of this and that and almost all they put in their issues are of coz interesting. :)
3. Tips and tips and tips. From Windows shortcuts to how to undelete your files. =p
4. A lil bit about IT-related business.
5. A lil bit about gadgets.
6. A lil bit 'bout web-tech.
7. They highlight some websites and blogs too! =)

Non-IT person? No worries. I believe everybody could enjoy reading it.

As long as you love the Internet, blogging, online business, gadgets, IT tips, knows Google and Facebook....well, need I list down more? I don't think so...well. they cover all that. =p
To game addicts, you may prefer something else. =p

Here's my copy!
Think I should just subscribe. Save the hassle... *sweat* Subscription for 12 issues is RM105. That is inclusive of 25% discount on each issue and RM24 postal delivery charge. It is selling at RM9 at newstand. To have a sneak peak of what they have in the mag, click here!
Enjoy!

Kinokuniya

There used to be Times and Kinokuniya in KLCC. However, after some time, there is only Kinokuniya left. Times is now replaced by Toy'R US. Hihi I'm privileged to be staying sooo nearby the city center and have KLCC only few kilometers away. =D
My Main Office is in KLCC and now that I'm on the bench, I could walk into Kinokuniya anytime. Well, I normally drop by either during lunch or after work. *grins* Today is not like any other days in Kino; there are queues at both cashiers. I find this odd coz everytime I go there, there are barely anybody queueing. Well, even if there are, there are only about 10ppl max in the line.
Could it be because its a Friday? Don't think so. I've been there almost every Fridays so I guess it is the school holidays. Glad to see the crowd though. It is great to know some Malaysians DO read. =) Best of all, I see kids reading with their parents. That is definitely a lovely sight. =)
Here is something I didn't know Kino provides. They provide book jacketing service at RM1 per book. So for those of you who cares for your books but are too lazy to get them protected, just pay RM1 to get it done. Gift wrapping remains FOC. =)
Wish I could work part-time there. I don't mind wrapping books. I don't mind rearranging books over and over again. I will smack those who hide and ruin books. =p Since dual-employment is against the policy where I'm working at, I can't do it. There goes my wish.... Anyway, nothing stops me from putting the books in place. I don't know how some people walk but they tend to run over the book stacks. Weird.
Kino also has a cafe at their 2nd floor. Never tried it but it seems nice enough to sit there with a book. =)
If you happen to wanna drop by, here are some details.

Lot 406-408 & 429 & 430
Level 4, Suria KLCC Kuala Lumpur City Centre,
50088, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Bookstores War in Malaysia!

Woohoo!
We first had the telco operators against one another;

Maxis vs DiGi vs Celcom

Then the wars went into the sky when

MAS vs AirAsia

Now, itz Times vs MPH vs Popular!!!

They are seriously making the consumers think hard before they spend their buckz. LOL!
I believe it is all back to us, consumers to pick which is best for us. Some offerings maybe valuable. Some maybe just there to compete. Some others...well, you decide.

Here'z a lil comparison between the Bookstore Sales.
I'm not too sure who started the war but the first sale I knew about is organized by the Times Bookstore. So lemme start with Times Bookstore.

It was held in conjunction of the World Book Day. The book fair was endorsed by World Book Day UK committee and the Irish ambassador. Objective? To promote books and reading to EVERYONE. books are for ALL. Wanna read more about Times Bookstore and World Book Day? Click here.

5th March 2009
End Date :
31st March 2009
Time :
10am - 10pm
Venue :
Pavilion KL, Bangsar Shopping Centre, Hartamas Shopping Centre, CapSquare Shopping Centre and Warisan Square Sabah.
Offerings :
1. 20% STOREWIDE discount for member and 10% for non-members. Well, you can always apply to be a member; RM15 only. =) Was member but yet to renew your membership? Now renewal fee is only RM10 for 2-years. OMG! Btw, STOREWIDE includes the new ones too!!!
2. Book Fair. Yes! It is back! Same place. Better offerings! Discounts upto 90% and 30% discount for bestsellers! Incase, you've never been there, it is at Level 1, Hartamas Shopping Centre. It is from 13th March to 22nd March; 11am to 9pm. Be sure to bring your kids! They'd surely love it. I've been there once. To check out my prev post, click here.

Twilight fans, click here to see what Times has got for you. ;)

'Nuff with Times. Letz move on to MPH.

Start Date :
7th March 2009
End Date :
17th March 2009
Time :
Not mentioned. Could be the normal 9am to 10pm.
Venue :
3rd Floor Event Hall, Bangsar Village 2.
Offerings :
1. Discounts up to 70%. Not too sure on what items; Bestsellers or ....
2. Stock Clearance Promotion. Where? Mayang Plaza, Jln ss26/2, Taman Mayang PJ from 14th to 2nd March; 9.30am to 7pm. Members get RM5 voucher for every RM150 nett purchases.
For those of you who doesn't know where it is, do ask Mr.Wikipedia or Mr.GoogleMap. Parking wise? I'm not too sure if they have ample space so do go early IF you plan to go. ;) To view the ad, click here.

Guess that is all the info I've got for MPH...now letz get to the last one at war; Popular Bookstore.

Start Date :
11th March 2009
End Date :
22nd March 2009
Time :
Varies according to the location. Do check out their ad here.
Venue :
Only 4 locations; Summit USJ Subang Jaya, Plaza Pelangi Johor, IOI Mall Puchong and Berjaya Mega Mall Pahang.
Offerings :
1. Discounts up to 90%.
2. RM5 voucher for every RM100 spent on the same day in a single receipt.

My overall view?
It won't be fair to say that Popular is not much of a competitor. Anyway, to look on the brighter side, if I'm not mistaken, Popular is the only one which has educational books for Malaysian students(among the stores warring ATM). Definitely be a good time for parents to buy revision and reference books. =) Popular could win easily too as they cater both parents and children's needs. Too bad sale is only available at 4 locations.

MPH? The online sale is forever so if you happen to have you eye on a book and wish to pay less, shoponline. If you spend more than RM150, delievery is FOC. I've bought a few books from their online store. Click here to read my post where I blabbed about it. No points accumulation for members. =/ Only members are eligible to get the RM5 voucher. No. You can't buy your membership on the fly. Their stock clearance is in Taman Mayang PJ. The place may not be as accessible for all and many doesn't know where it is too. Considering it is now a rainy season, won't be nice to get lost in. Haha. Anyway, there is still Bangsar Village. =)

Lastly, Times Bookstore. I believe their people are working hard in the background especially when they manage to get the endorsement from the World Book Day committee and also the Irish ambassador. Besides that, they also have a few authors apprearances in Pavilion.I have a post on this. Click here to view. I have to say they are smart to have Travel Promo where they give discounts on travel accessories....Matta Fair. Remember? ;)

So who's gonna win? No one knows. Best of luck to MPH and Times. hihihi If I'm not too broke, I'd definitely go to Times Bookfair in Hartamas. Been there last time and 3hours is not enough! Plus, non-members could benefit from it too. Kids could juz runaround and pick what they like. Well, this is from my past experience. =) Why won't I go to Bangsar Village for MPH or Summit for Popular? Well, let'z just say....these 2 places are not within my radius. =p Not somewhere I usually hang out. No offense but Summit could be very dull. IOI? Sowie. Not-so hangout place too. If you say MidValley or Gardens, I'd probably say Yes. =) If popular were to have their Book Fest now, MPH and Times would have to work harder.

Enjoy the weekend and I hope more would pick up reading especially kids and young adults. Reading is a gazillion times better than juz sit around at some mamak talking nonsense and come home smelling like cig and of coz mamak. JK =p

That'z all for now.

Feel free to share your bookshopping experience if you have been to any of the war-sites mentioned above.

Cheers!

p/s: The choice is yours. I like what I like. You may not like what I like. I may not like what you like. =p

eBooks vs Physical Books

I read both types of books. eBooks are FREE and easily found. You can practically download any book you want provided someone shares it. ;) My favourite source has got to be the Gigiapedia.org :) Many would say they prefer reading the real book rather than reading an ebook. I prefer reading a real book too.

Here are some reasons why ebooks are lovely.
1. FREE
2. Can be read inbetween windows...would be very lovely when you have to wait for some batch programs to finish executing.
3. Comes in various formats; .pdf, .doc, .lit, .html and maybe many more...so you can pick which formats you're comfortable with. Anyhow, it still depends on availability.
4. Others won't know you're actually happily reading a book...unless they read ebooks too coz it will look like just another document. ;)
5. You can "window shop" have whatever book u want!!!! Could eat up your disk space though.

I still read ebooks from time to time. Think the best is when the book has >200pages. If you need a technical book, ebook is the best too!!!! If you happen to wanna copy some lines of codes, you can just copy and paste it....and then ammend to your prog. Ez-pz. :) LOVELY.

On the other hand, the physical books are still the best coz you can bring it anywhere you go without needing a laptop and power supply. You can lay down with it and read it in any positions you're comfortable in while reading. It doesn't occupy any disk spaces but it occupies the space in your room/house...and of course the bookshelves. Well, itz a beautiful sight. *recalling Rainbow Bookshelf* This may sound odd but the smell of books are also nice...hihihi

Women can never have enough pair of shoes. Four women became best of friends when they started exchanging shoes every week. Lorna started the group to satisfy her addiction for shoes and to reduce the amount of money she spends on shoes. Helene, the unhappy wife of a well-known politician got her credit card blocked by husband when she wanted to buy shoes when he's not happy with her. Sandra loves shoes but she barely gets out of her house; agoraphobia. Joss is the only one who is not an addict. In fact, she wonders what is so fascinating about shoes. She joined the Shoe Addicts Anonymous every week just to get out of her employer's house as they are telling her to do tasks out of her job scope. It all ended well. =) One of them has a baby. One of them has a goodlooking boyfriend who designs shoes. The other 2? You gotta read to find out. =p Conclusion is...everyone of them has unlimited supply of shoes. The storyline is clear and I believe every girl would enjoy reading it too. One of the books which got me smiling from time to time while I read. As you get pass the middle, you wouldn't wanna put it down. ;)

eBooks Pool

After all my books purchases, I believe I have more than enough to read til atleast June this year. =) with that, I vow not to buy anymore books atleast til the next Sophie Kinsella's book is released.

I no longer buy tech books unless it is REALLY crucial to have it in physical form. I.T. makes the world "smaller" and every info seems to be reachable within a click and I'm oh soooo very grateful for it! =) Ebooks are great especially when you want to save some bucks...

Honestly, I still prefer to have the REAL books in my hands but I read ebooks from time to time.

The following is a list of sources where you can download eBooks. FOC!

Too Many Books

How many books are too many? Many a time I've been told to not buy anymore books, throw my books away, give 'em away or ..... No way I'll ever throw them away. I BOUGHT them! Plus, I will never ever throw away my reference books. You'll never know when you need 'em. Give them away? Depends. I gave away quite a number of books to the orphanage. Stop buying books??? You gotta be kidding me!

Well, some will tell me its a waste of money. I can't believe anyone would ever say that. How can reading waste your time? They should see themselves watching the idiot box and compare with reading. =p I know there are ebooks now. I read them from time to time but the feel is different. SERIOUSLY. Can borrow 'em from the library? Funny. The libraries don't seem to have new books. If you wanna focus on your history project, that might be the best place to look for info. What's best? Income tax reduction people. Well, for those who are making alot of bucks won't care but those who are like me, 1 thousand bucks is something! ;)

What triggered this topic? I've recently rearranged my books...thanks to the Rainbow Bookshelf. No. I DO NOT HAVE A RAINBOW BOOKSHELF. It doesn't seem to turn out like a rainbow. :( Need more books. =p

Back to the first question, how many books are too many? Too many books will never occur. Seriously. The one thing which is lacking is a nice big bookshelf to accommodate the books. :)

I bumped into a wiki which shares how to stop accommodating books. Some of the given tips are make a "to buy" list, give away books which are not worth keeping and et cetera. If you'd like to view the list, click here.

What have I done to cut down the number of books I've got?
1. Sold them online.
2. Gave 'em away to the less privileged.
3. Pass it on to my brothers.
4. Keep it elsewhere. =p
(Hope this list could grow til I could have a nice BIG bookshelf.)

A member of BooksterHub on Facebook shared some links to the event hosted by Scholastic last year where they encouraged kids to read and give away books to the less privileged. I hope I will not be too busy when the next one is held so that I could gather the storybooks my brothers do not want anymore and donate them. :) IF anybody happens to want to collect books for this cause, do inform me. Thanks. :)
